France's 100,000 lightning strikes MAPPED: Brutal weather hits nation in 12 hours

Storm warnings have been issued for nine regions in the south west of France, including the Dordogne, with national weather agency Meteo France advisising people to stay at home and ensure their shutters are down.
BBC weather presenter Carol Kirkwood said an incredible 100,000 lightning strikes had been recorded in France over 12 hours.
Up to four cm of rain has fallen in some areas within an hour accompanied by very strong wind gusts, reaching up to 120 km/ph.
According to the French lightning protection association, victims who escape death can still suffer serious burns and psychological shock.
The risk of getting hit increases with the temperature so it is more important to be vigilant when the warm weather arrives.

Myanmar Dam Fails, Forcing 50,000 to Evacuate

At least 50,000 people were chased from their homes by floodwaters in central Myanmar after a dam failed, inundating several towns Wednesday.

The dam sent water rushing into the town of Swar at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, prompting a major response just days after authorities inspected the dam and said it was safe, Reuters reported. In addition to those forced to leave their homes as floodwaters invaded, many others evacuated because they were fearful the flooding would worsen, the report added.

"We don’t have exact data about the number of victims, but the water has hit villages where more than 50,000 people live," Ministry of Social Welfare Director Phyu Lae Lae Tun told the French Press Agency, as reported by the Guardian.
No deaths have been confirmed in the flooding, but an official in the town of Yedashe told Reuters that two people swept away in the floodwaters remain missing, and they're unsure if anyone else was trapped in the town as the water rose. Fire officials also shut down the Yangon-Mandalay bridge, a key thoroughfare in the region, because flooding had risen to dangerous levels, according to the Times of Malta.

Water levels have been high in central Myanmar because of monsoon rains that left 100,000 homeless and killed at least 11 people in July, the Times of Malta also said.

The flooding began to recede Wednesday afternoon, but residents assessed the widespread damage as they returned. Farmer Aung Aung, who fled his home as fast as he could to escape the floodwaters in the town of Kone Gyi Lan Sone, told Reuters he suffered huge losses

Tropical Development is Possible Labor Day Weekend Near the Bahamas, Florida or in the Gulf of Mexico Next Week

A tropical depression or tropical storm may develop late this Labor Day weekend near the Bahamas or Florida, then move into the Gulf of Mexico next week, just one thing we're watching as the Atlantic hurricane season wakes up from its August slumber.
A tropical wave – essentially, an area of low pressure without a closed circulation – is currently gliding west-northwest through the Lesser Antilles, producing showers.
Currently, wind shear – the change in wind direction and/or speed with height – is sufficiently low to allow this tropical wave from developing the next few days.

Turning a corner: Cooler, wetter weather dampens wildfires in southwest Montana

Dan Zumpfe, a Missoula-based meteorologist for the National Weather Service, won't say wildfire season is over in southwest Montana, but he will allow this: "We seem to have turned a corner in the past few days.”

Around that corner, according to Zumpfe, are lower temperatures and, crucially, higher daytime humidity. As a result, he says, “It’s unlikely that we’d see weather conditions that would contribute to wildfire spread."

The rain that began Sunday and continued through much of Monday helped dampen existing fires, and fire activity on all four Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest fires has started to wind down.
