Big Story Weather from Jun 7-9: Severe weather was again over portion of the Plains this past weekend with a few tornadoes, more wind damage and large hail being reported. The second big impact from the weekend was the tropical storm that made landfall in Florida and moved up the East Coast bringing copious amounts of rainfall which lead to flooding and small amounts of storm surge. The third big event has been the heat over the Southwest where temps have been soaring into the 100-110F range.

Big Story Weather Discussion for June 10: Low pressure will be moving into the Great Lakes. Ahead of this we will see rain showers over the Northeast. Strong to severe thunderstorms will hit the Mid-Atlantic and trail back into the Gulf Coast. High pressure will dominate from the Plains to the West Coast. This region is going to see very hot weather, especially the Southwest and Plains.

Severe Weather: There is the chance for severe weather from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast associated with the frontal boundary that is moving through. The majority of the impacts will be damaging winds, large hail and a few tornadoes.

Tropical Weather: No impacts forecasted for the next 24 hours for the United States.

Here is the weather for a few select cities:

Buffalo NY: Partly cloudy with afternoon thunderstorms and a high near 67F. Overnight lows will be around 62F. Total rainfall on the day will be near 0.40 inches.

Gulfport MS: Mostly cloudy with thunderstorms – some which may be strong to severe. High temps will be around 84F and overnight lows will fall to near 77F. Total rainfall today will be around 0.50 inches.

Chicago IL: Partly cloudy skies with a few thunderstorms possible. High temps will be around 68F and overnight lows will fall to 60F. Total rainfall today will be around 0.25 inches.

Boise ID: Partly cloudy skies with a high near 79F. Overnight lows will be around 74F.

Portland OR: Partly cloudy with a cool high near 57F. Overnight lows will be around 50F.

June 10, 2013 Storm Tracker Update:

Eastern Pacific: A strong area of low pressure is moving towards the Gulf of Alaska. Expect to see strong winds and high seas. Low pressure off the coast of Central America will have to be watched for potential tropical development over the next 24 hours. Low pressure to the south of Fiji will bring heavy rain to the region. Two areas of low pressure moving along the southern part of South America will bring showers to parts of Argentina.

Western Atlantic: Low pressure moving across the Great Lakes today will bring showers, thunderstorms and severe weather to the region from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast.

Eastern Atlantic: Low pressure moving towards England will bring increased clouds and winds to the region today.

Western Pacific: Low pressure to the southeast of Hong Kong needs to be watched for potential tropical development along with an area to the southeast of Guam. Low pressure to the east of Japan will bring high winds and seas to the open oceans. Tropical Storm Yagi currently has winds around 40kts and a pressure of 993mb and is forecasted to make landfall in Central Japan just south of Tokyo.

Indian Ocean: Multiple areas of low pressure are moving through south of Africa and will only bring open ocean impacts. A strong push in the monsoonal trough near Southeast Asia has created a large flare up of thunderstorms and regions of lower pressure over the area. Expect to see afternoon thunderstorms for a large portion of the region.

Five-Day Storm Index Outlook for June 10-14:

Buffalo NY: The region will have moderate impacts the next two days as thunderstorms move through the region. Another chance for slight impacts on June 13 as a second frontal boundary impacts the area.

Gulfport MS: The area will see moderate impacts today with strong-severe thunderstorms and then another slight impact on June 14 as another round of thunderstorms moves through the region.

Chicago IL: The area will see slight to moderate impacts today followed by another chance on June 12 with more thunderstorms possible.

Boise ID: The next five days will be impact free.

Portland OR: The area will start out impact free. By June 13-14, the region will see slight impacts as showers move into the area.

Climate Watch for June 5-9:

Buffalo NY: Over the past four days the region has seen temps around 2-13 degrees below normal. The period finished with temps about 3 degrees above normal.

Gulfport MS: The region started the period with temps around 1 degree below then warmed to around 1-4 degrees above normal before falling back to around 6 degrees below normal.

Chicago IL: The region has seen most of the period with temps around 3-13 degrees below normal followed by temps around 2 degrees above normal to finish the period.

Boise ID: The past five days the area has seen temps around 8-15 degrees above normal.

Portland OR: The past five days temps have been around 2-12 degrees above normal.

Major Weather Impacts Discussion for June 10, 2013:

Day 1-3: A storm system moving through the Great Lakes will bring showers and thunderstorms to the region. This will also extend into the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and back towards the Southeast and Gulf Coast. High pressure over the Rockies will bring a very warm day to places from the Northern Plains to the Southwest, while the West Coast enjoys a mild day. A weak upper level feature will bring a few showers and thunderstorms to the Northern Plains by day two, while the storm system continues to push up the East Coast. The period will finish with one storm system in the Mid-Atlantic and another over the Northern Plains. Both systems will bring a chance of severe weather to the area.

Day 4-7: The period will start with a potent storm system moving through the Mid-Atlantic bringing heavy rains and severe weather to the area. The storm in the Plains will also bring more severe weather and heavy rains to the region. High pressure over the Rockies will make for another warm day from the Southwest into the Southern Plains and the Gulf Coast. Day five high pressure will build in over the Great Lakes, while a storm system impacts the Northern Plains with more rainfall and cooler weather. Showers and thunderstorms will also be possible along the Gulf Coast. High pressure out West will keep the area warm. Day six high pressure pushes into the East Coast, while the storm system over the Plains brings another day of severe weather to the region. The period will finish with the storm system impacting the Great Lakes with showers and thunderstorms. Another storm system will bring showers and thunderstorms to the Plains. Tropical moisture will be on the increase south of Cuba.

Day 8-12: The period will start with showers over the Northeast and also the Northwest. The storm system will move into the Mississippi River Valley bringing showers and thunderstorms to the area. Tropical moisture will again surge back into Southern Florida. Day nine the storm system will move into the Southeast bringing rain and severe weather to the area. A new storm system will bring showers to the Northern Rockies and also the Northern Plains. Day ten a storm system over the Northern Plains will bring showers to the region. These will expand into the Great Lakes as well. Tropical moisture may start to impact Southern Texas. The period will finish with a storm system along the East Coast.
