Strong winds, temperatures in the 60s and a possible snowfall are all in Chicago’s boomerang three-day forecast.
“It’s definitely more of a spring-like system,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Jamie Enderlen. “When the cold air comes back in, we’ll come back to a more typical winter setup.”
Temperatures may reach the 50s Monday and then climb to 64 Tuesday, potentially breaking a record of 59 set in 1914. The all-time record high for the month of January is 67 degrees, set in 1950.
Along with the warm-up Tuesday comes the possibility of severe afternoon thunderstorms, bringing strong winds of up to 20-25 mph and up to 2-1/2 inches of rain. Areas south of I-80 could see the most precipitation, Enderlen said.
But the spring-like temperatures and rain won’t last for long.
On Tuesday evening temperatures will plummet, with Wednesday’s highs falling into the 30s. Some snowfall is expected, though Enderlen said it’s still too early to know how much could accumulate.
