SEVERE WEATHER ALERT: Sunday Morning Snow Causes Treacherous Roads, Closes Churches

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The tri-state region has seen heavy snow since early Sunday morning.

Some places have received up to five inches of accumulation, causing dangerous driving conditions and many churches to cancel services.

Several accidents were reported Sunday morning.

Dozens of churches in the region cancelled Sunday services. WSAZ.com has a full list of church closings.

Expect a transition from snow to sleet and freezing rain Sunday, which already started along I-64. This will cause even more travel issues. It’s been all sleet and freezing rain over the Coal Fields with no snow accumulation.

Phase two of this system will the risk for high water as the wintry precipitation changes over to all rain. There is still a flood watch out for eastern Kentucky and much of West Virginia that will last through Monday morning.

Roads are slick and people are asked to stay inside if at all possible.
