As Winter Storm Janus winds up, just over the horizon another round of wintry weather is possible. But this time it will be in an area that might be a bit unexpected, the Gulf Coast. As a short of very cold arctic air cold dives deep into the heart of Texas late Thursday, moisture will stream in overhead from the Gulf of Mexico. This could trigger some precipitation from San Antonio to Houston. And given that throughout much of south Texas temperatures could drop into the mid and upper 20s Thursday night, this precipitation could turn wintry. Model data currently suggest that the precipitation may start as rain in many areas before the shallow layer of cold air causes a changeover to sleet, with perhaps a brief period of freezing rain as well. As the temperatures fall, ice buildup on roadways — especially bridges and overpasses — is not out of the question. This will probably not be a long-lasting event, as the precipitation should wind down sometime early Friday.
