On January 4th, 2014, Metra had enacted its already prepared "winter plan" to combat the subzero temperatures and bitter snow that were about to arrive in the Chicagoland area. However, Metra still encountered several difficulties.
According to Interim Executive Director Donald Orseno, such difficulties were, "equipment that was penetrated by the fine, blowing snow and locked up by subzero temperatures. Other headaches occurred when snow and ice also collected on the undercarriages of trains, then fell onto switches, jamming them." Metra crews needed to resort to blowtorches, picks, and shovels to free the switches.
Due to the biter cold and snow that arrived the first week of the new year, weather induced delays, maintenance issues, and cancellations occurred that inconvenienced many Metra commuters. Metra's top management team spoke publicly Tuesday in hopes to repair the agency's image.
