Biggest Ocean Preserve on Earth Planned for Pacific

A massive stretch of the Pacific Ocean will be protected from oil and gas exploration, fishing and other actions that could threaten marine wildlife if a plan announced today by President Barack Obama is enacted as proposed.
The move would result in a huge expansion of the Pacific Remote Islands National Marine Monument, whose waters surround a group of mostly uninhabited islands, controlled by the U.S., that sit between Hawaii and American Samoa.
The roughly 87,000-square-mile monument, which was created in 2009 by then-President George W. Bush, would expand to nearly 782,000 square miles under Obama's proposal, the Washington Post reported.
