A mudslide in the Swiss town of Lugano destroyed a house, killing two women.
Meanwhile, just over the border in Italy, an elderly man and his granddaughter died – again due to a mudslide which engulfed their property in the town of Cerro di Laveno.
The latest fatalities mean at least 11 people have died in Italy as a result of extreme weather in the past month.
The heavy rain is set to continue and lakes Lugano and Maggiore are close to bursting their banks while the Ticino River in northern Italy has already overflowed.
