Snowstorm Brings Slippery Travel to Chicago and Other Cities

Snowfall totals exceeded half a foot in some areas, including across southeastern Minnesota, southern Wisconsin, northern Illinois and Michigan. As the rate of snow intensifies throughout the event, roads will quickly become slippery and snow-covered, and travel will become increasingly more treacherous.

As of 2:00 a.m. EST Monday, moderate to heavy snowfall was reported across northern and eastern Michigan. Traffic across northeastern Ohio is slowed, but not congested, as snow and rain continue eastward out of the region. Even with the end of precipitation in sight, freezing conditions throughout the Midwest will cause untreated roads to become slippery come rush hour. Heavy snow that barreled through central Pennsylvania and into New England is causing travel delays as well. Most roads in the northern half of the state are reportedly snow or slush covered. The speed limit has been lowered to 45 mph.

As of 2:53 p.m. EST Sunday, road conditions deteriorated across New York state as snow advances into the Northeast. Snow has moved into Buffalo and New York. Snow is falling moderate to heavy at times across portions of northwestern Pennsylvania as of 1:00 p.m. EST Sunday. Much of this region was buried under feet of snow during a significant lake-effect snow event this past week. As of 12:15 p.m. EST Sunday, the heaviest snow felled across central and northern Michigan. Snow will continue to expand across the interior Northeast as the day progresses, leading to deteriorating roadway conditions.

As of 11:15 a.m. EST Sunday, snow ramp up in intensity across the Detroit metro area. Four to 8 inches of snow was expected to accumulate across the city before the snow winded down on Monday.

Snowfall totals have generally been around 4 to 8 inches from Minneapolis to La Crosse, Wisconsin. The snow-covered roads caused slippery travel throughout the region.
