Climate Change affecting Reindeer?
In northern Sweden, data from certain weather stations have shown that the snow season has been shortened by over two months in the last 30 years, which has huge effects on reindeer herding. Also, the climate sensitive human infection tularemia has ten folded over the same period and is much more common now than before. This according to a dissertation at Umeå University in Sweden.
I think it is pretty evident that climate change is here and affecting many things. Of all the things affected by climate change, the reindeer population may have been the last on my mind. But, considering that the snow season is decreasing rapidly over a 30 year span, there is no doubt that animals such as reindeer are in trouble.
"Our research shows that climate change in northern Sweden is more extensive than anticipated and that reindeer herding is very vulnerable," says Maria Furberg, doctoral student at the Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine and the Department of Clinical Microbiology.
It is scary to think that climate change has such a huge affect on these animals. I wonder if they will ever adapt as a species, or just continue to decrease as the years go on. There are many reasons to be educated about climate change. Maybe people will open their eyes to the subject when beloved reindeer start diminishing.
