The coral reef is being destroyed by the rising temperatures of the oceans, this will severely impact the Florida Keys tourism businesses.

But less than 10 percent of the reef system is now covered with living coral. Scientists anticipate that as early as 2020, it could be in line for almost yearly bleaching events, in which heat stresses upend the metabolism of corals, in some cases killing them. The reefs experienced back-to-back major bleaching events in 2014 and 2015.

New study confirms the oceans are warming rapidly

As humans put ever more heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere, the Earth heats up. These are the basics of global warming. But where does the heat go? How much extra heat is there? And how accurate are our measurements? These are questions that climate scientists ask.

Hurricane Bret

Tropical Storm Bret's formation on June 19 was in the so-called main development region (MDR) of the tropical Atlantic. The MDR of the Atlantic typically sees the vast majority of its activity during the height of the hurricane season – August into September.

The southeastern U.S. coast, Gulf of Mexico and the western Caribbean are usual breeding grounds for tropical storms in June. The map below of storm origins since 1950 shows Bret's far removal from where systems typically develop in June.

Bret is only the third known tropical storm to develop in the MDR region before July 1 in 167 years of records, according to Bob Henson of Weather Underground. Bret's naming on June 19 also marked the earliest a storm has formed in the MDR, beating Ana, which formed June 22, 1979.

Hurricane Dora became the first hurricane of the 2017 eastern Pacific hurricane season early Monday morning, but will move safely away from the Mexican coast this week, with only peripheral effects expected along the coast.

In Ringgold, Louisiana, several homes were damaged and a church was destroyed and near Marshall, Texas a semi truck was overturned on Interstate 20. An EF2 was also confirmed near Marshall, Texas with winds of up to 115 mph. 

At least 5 tornadoes have been confirmed in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. 

Deaths in the South

Strong to severe thunderstorms produced a long swath of damaging wind gusts, large hail and tornadoes across the South Monday into early Tuesday.

Six people lost their lives Monday into Monday night. Among these included four people who died near Dothan, Alabama, in severe storms that likely produced a tornado. One death occurred in Florida due to flooding, and another fatality happened in Georgia. 

High winds damaging buildings

Monday afternoon, storms produced wind gusts as high as 78 mph in Chautauqua County, New York.

A 60-mph wind gust was measured in Oswego, New York, which damaged a wind turbine on the SUNY Oswego campus.

Damaging thunderstorm winds in Youngstown, Ohio, ripped roofs off buildings and knocked down trees, there.

Severe storms on Sunday produced a combination of funnel clouds, damaging wind gusts, large hail and flooding rain in parts of northern Indiana, northern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and southwestern New York.

The funnel cloud pictured in the tweet below was seen in North Manchester, Indiana, Sunday afternoon. This is roughly 35 miles west of Fort Wayne. No tornado touchdowns have been reported, however.
