NASA Finds Dorian Transitioning to an Extra-Tropical Cyclone


By Friday morning, September 6, Hurricane Dorian was located off the coast of North Carolina, having generated tornadoes the previous day as the northern rainband came ashore in North Carolina. The storm-total rainfall at a particular location varies with the forward speed of the hurricane, with the size of the hurricane's wind field, and with how vigorous the updrafts are inside the hurricane. As Hurricane Dorian interacted with the U.S. East Coast, the only tornado reports occurred from 4:50 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT on September 5 in North and South Carolina. On Sept. 6 at 3:20 a.m. EDT, NASA's Aqua satellite provided temperature data on Hurricane Dorian to show where strongest storms were located with cloud top temperatures as cold as minus 70 degrees Fahrenheit. At 8 a.m. EDT on Sept. 6, the National Hurricane Center said the eye of Dorian was near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Major Hail Strom in Colorado

An event occurred in the state of Colorado  yesterday on  09/07/19. Up to four inches of  hail  covered I-70 near Floyd Hill in Jefferson County on Friday. I-70 reopens early morning Saturday after a closure on Friday. A fast-moving storm headed from the mountains to Denver metro area. The westbound lanes were closed as the crew assessed damage in the area. Interstate 70 remained closed overnight. Floyd Hill is the area where the severe storm hit the hardest this is located east of Idaho Springs. The strong storm caused a rockslide that led to overnight closure of  the highway. The rockslide occurred some time around 3p.m. Traffic was backed up for miles. The highway has re-opened about 6:30a.m on Saturday. The Colorado State Patrol has stated that no cars were swept away or caught in the mud. Troopers reported that water and hail were removed on the roadway more than a half-hour after the storm hit. The strongest portion of the storm moved through the southern metro area, triggering severe thunderstorm warnings in the areas of Lakewood, Littleton and Centennial. A tornado warning was issued for parts of Arapahoe County, including Aurora and Foxfield, east of Centennial.

Hurricane Dorian Possible Hit on Canada after North Carolina's Landfall

To  begin with, Hurricane Dorian raced through the Atlantic Ocean on Friday night on a path that might take the storm across Nova Scotia on Saturday. The Category 1 hurricane will pass southeastern New England on Friday and Saturday. The center of the storm will move across the Canadian province on Saturday night. A hurricane warning was in effect for eastern Nova Scotia. The storm was moving at northeast at 24 mph with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph.Residents of the United States were cleaning up after the storm made landfall in North Carolina and brushed other East Coast states on Friday. Dorian's top winds are expected to weaken . After the North Carolina landfall the storm washed out rods, knocked out power and led thousands of coastal residents to seek refuge in public shelters. At least four deaths in the Southeast were blamed on the storm. Nearly 350,000 residents and businesses were without power in North and South Carolina.

Hurricane Dorian: What dictates a hurricane's strength?

There are many ways to categorize a hurricane.
The storm's central pressure is one way. The height of its storm surge is another. How much rain it drops is another. And, of course, the strength of its wind is another. But what causes a hurricane to strengthen or weaken? The answer is simple enough, but multifaceted.  In order for a tropical wave or disturbance to organize and become a tropical system, ocean water temperatures need to be above 80 degrees, and the wind aloft needs to be light. If those favorable conditions persist, then the system progresses to the hurricane stage. As that storm approaches places where we live, or have family or property, then interest in the storm's strength really heightens.
There are many factors that impact whether that hurricane will strengthen or weaken, or remain in a steady state. The most obvious is the ocean temperature, and it's more than just the surface temperature…we meteorologists look at the upper ocean's heat content. If the storm moves over cooler waters, then there will be some weakening.  Conversely, warmer ocean waters are like throwing gasoline on a fire. Warmer waters mean that more water vapor evaporates up into the storm, which is then turned into rain. But there's more to that story: Condensation releases energy…and that's energy added to the hurricane's system. What becomes especially interesting is if a hurricane becomes stationary. When that happens, cooler water from deep below the ocean surface upwells, and a cooler pool of water can form underneath the hurricane, which can weaken it.  In fact, sometimes, a tropical system moving over the same path as a previous hurricane encounters these areas of cooler water, which can affect their own development.

Not Just Dorian: 8 Other Tropical Systems We're Watching Around the Globe

Hurricane Dorian devastated the northwestern Bahamas and is now leaving its mark along the southeastern United States.But Dorian is far from the only game in town. There are eight other systems around the Northern Hemisphere that are either named storms or areas that may develop into named storms soon.
Here's a rundown of each of the systems in each basin. 

Atlantic Basin

-Gabrielle: Gabrielle will not be a threat to land, curling northwestward into the central Atlantic Ocean. It could become a hurricane by early next week.
There are three other areas that could become tropical depressions.
-Invest 94L is a tropical wave near the Cabo Verde Islands. It has a medium chance of development by early next week as it moves across the eastern Atlantic tropics. It's too soon to tell if this disturbance will pose any threat to land areas, assuming it develops at all.
-Invest 92L: An area of low pressure northeast of Bermuda has been given low odds by the National Hurricane Center of developing over the next two days.
-The third system is an area of low pressure several hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands. Slow development of this disturbance is possible over the next couple of days, and the NHC has given this area a low chance of development.

Eastern/Central Pacific

-Juliette has been spinning in the Eastern Pacific Ocean well off the Mexican coast for the past several days and is no threat to land. Unfortunately, its eyewall did manage to slam tiny Clarion Island Tuesday, a 7.6-square-mile Mexican island 435 miles southwest of Los Cabos.
-Akoni, a new tropical storm, formed much farther west than Juliette. It is expected to gain some strength, but track well south of Hawaii early next week.

This sounds like a lot of activity at once, but it's pretty par for the course this time of year.

Hurricane Dorian Hits Carolina With Flooding, Winds, & Tornados

Hurricane Dorian was pounding much of the Carolina coast with heavy rain and strong winds on Thursday. This has causes small tornadoes and causing widespread power losses and flooding. Some time on Thursday during afternoon the Category 2 storm was about 55 miles from Myrtle Beach, S.C., as it continues its creep up the East Coast, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm can possibly make a landfall on the Outer Banks of North Carolina some time on Friday. The Dorian hurricane brought tornadoes to North Myrtle Beach and Little River. As of early Thursday afternoon, nearly 10 inches of rain had fallen on Pawleys Island, more than eight inches on Myrtle Beach and up to 7.5 inches in Charleston, all of which Mr. Quagliariello warned could increase the risk of flash flooding.The Waccamaw River is expected to crest late on Friday and into Saturday morning.Some 441,000 people evacuated their homes ahead of Dorian, a number similar to the evacuations for Hurricane Florence last year.

New Hurricane Warnings Issued in Eastern North Carolina Ahead of Dorian

New hurricane warnings have been issued for eastern North Carolina as Dorian continues its crawl up the Southeast coast into Friday.
Hurricane warnings now stretch from north of the Savannah River on the border between Georgia and South Carolina to the border between North Carolina and Virginia. This hurricane warning also includes the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds.
The hurricane warnings in South Carolina include Hilton Head Island, Charleston and Myrtle Beach. Wilmington, Morehead City and Nags Head are included in the warning for North Carolina.
Dorian now has maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, making it a Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Storm surge flooding, damaging winds and flooding rainfall are expected as Dorian hugs the Southeast coast into Friday.
