Thousands of leather jackets were found about a week ago on beaches in the Port Neill area.
Aquaculture manager Peter Lauer said testing had ruled out disease.
"We can see that there were unusual weather patterns at the time, such as high water temperatures and unusual currents in the area," he said.
"It looks as though the winds coming from the south-east have pushed the fish onto shore essentially."
Big dry
South Australia is having prolonged dry weather.
Rainfall was less than half the average during April 2012 to February this year.
Meteorologists said it was the third-driest period on record.
The weather bureau said unusually hot, dry conditions had been evident across pastoral areas.
