Stunning Images of Earth at Night (PHOTOS)

Night images of earth can provide valuable data for unforeseen weather events, according to the government agency’s website. During superstorm Sandy, which slammed the east coast the night of October 29, images of the night sky offered a complete view of the storm and the widespread power outages. Low light sensors were also able to detect fog and other hard to see weather conditions.
Some of the images above were made possible by NASA’s recent “day-night band” satellite technology, which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared. According to NASA, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) uses filtering methods to spot dim light signals produced by cities, gas flares, wildfires, auroras and reflected moonlight.
