A cold front dipping south and moving across the state has already produced some action in the western part of the state and southern New Hampshire, and scattered thunderstorms are set to develop after noon especially near the Massachusetts Turnpike, forecasters said in a special weather statement issued for most of the state.
The storms may produce damaging wind gusts, hail, lightning, and heavy rain.
“If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning,” forecasters said.
Those with outdoor plans are advised to have a safe place to shelter should storms approach.
Weather service radar showed a line of storms passing through the North Shore area in the late morning hours.

With a high amount of upper atmosphere instability on Thursday, “We could get some good storms,” Simpson said. In the morning, look for partly sunny skies and a high of 80 degrees. Anticipate rain with a rumble of thunder beginning after 1 p.m. and lasting through the evening.
On Friday, after a taste of summer, “we go back to near-normal,” as highs return to the normal 67 degrees, coupled with a chance of showers, Simpson said. The weekend looks fair, with highs sticking near normal and mostly sunny skies.
