Severe weather forcast with tornados possible

An active pattern will continue across much of the Plains and Midwest over the next several days. Severe thunderstorms will threaten parts of these regions on a daily basis. Tornadoes are likely in parts of the Central Plains Tuesday, and conditions are looking favorable for the potential development of a derecho -- a long-lived squall line with widespread damaging winds covering a path of several hundred miles -- Tuesday night or Wednesday, or potentially both.

This could be a particularly damaging straight line wind event; while 58-mph winds are strong enough for a thunderstorm to be considered severe, many places could experience gusts over 70 mph with storms Tuesday and Wednesday. Spotty gusts of 80 mph -- enough to overturn mobile homes and uproot large trees -- are not out of the question. Power outages are likely wherever the most powerful of the storms strike, so be mindful of charging your smartphones and other important battery-operated devices before the storm.
