The System that Cried Wolf

Roughly three out of every four tornado warnings issued by the National Weather Service are false alarms.

No, that's not a misprint. Only one in four tornado warnings contain a verified confirmed tornado within the warned area during the time of the warning. But that doesn't mean you should just ignore them.


On average, about 70 percent of all confirmed tornadoes occur in an active tornado-warned area. In other words, seven out of 10 confirmed tornadoes were covered by a tornado warning at the time. The success rate has doubled since the mid-1980s, thanks to Doppler radar, technology and meteorologists' better understanding of tornadic environments.

Polar Gigantism



Where can you find sea spiders the size of dinner plates? Head to the frigid waters off Antarctica, and you'll likely run across one.

The size isn't normal for these arthropods. In other parts of the world, they're much smaller, a few centimeters or less. But in Antarctica, they experience what’s called polar gigantism, and it's exactly what it sounds like: "Marine invertebrates that occur at the poles in really cold water tend to have much larger body sizes than their relatives that live elsewhere," Art Woods, Ph.D., of the University of Montana, told weather.com.

It doesn't just happen to sea spiders. The phenomenon has been seen in marine sponges, worms, even the single-celled organisms studied by scientists like Sam Bowser, Ph.D., an investigator at the New York State Department of Health's Wadsworth Center. "Some of them are the size of your pinky nails," he told weather.com, about the organisms typically only visible under a microscope.

Antarctica has been a hot bed for polar gigantism but it's not the only place to see extra-large species. It occurs in the deep sea as well, aptly named deep-sea gigantism there, according to Amy Moran, Ph.D., of the University of Hawaii, who along with Woods, studies these species. "Different groups of organisms respond to weird environments in different ways," she told weather.com. "We’re trying to understand the animals in these environments."


In fact, why this happens remains an open-ended question, though there is one prevailing theory, and it has to do with oxygen. Pole-dwelling organisms have low metabolic rates because they are cold, living in what Woods describes as slow motion compared to, say, humans. They don't burn oxygen quickly. Yet there's an immense amount of oxygen available to them. "There's a lot of supply compared to how much demand there is for oxygen," he said. "We think that may allow them to evolve very large body sizes because they’re not starving for oxygen."

Dried Up

Mankind's insatiable thirst for water resources in recent decades has pushed our most precious natural resource to the brink. Bodies of water, stressed by human consumption, are disappearing quicker than we ever imagined. Many of the world's largest rivers have become victimized by water demand. In fact, as the slideshow above shows, 18 of the world's mightiest rivers are undergoing "extremely high" water stress, meaning more than 80 percent of their flow is withdrawn each year.


Couple water demand with a grim forecast for more severe droughts due to climate change, and the stress on some bodies of water becomes too much to bear. Ancient shorelines are retreating and leaving behind death and decay in the place of once thriving wetland ecosystems.

Arkansas Tornado Outbreak’s First Victim

A brand new, $14 million school is among the wreckage after a half-mile-wide tornado swept through the Little Rock suburb of Vilonia, the Associated Press reports. The tornado was described as leveling the school, which had been set to open this fall.

"There's just really nothing there anymore,” Vilonia Schools Superintendent Frank Mitchell said. “We're probably going to have to start all over again."

The school was intended to serve students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades and covered 10 acres of land. The district had applied to FEMA for funds to build a “safe room” at the school, designed to protect students from tornadoes and other severe weather.


The tornado that hit Vilonia and nearby Mayflower could be rated as the nation's strongest twister to date this year. It has the potential to be at least an EF3 storm, which has winds greater than 136 mph, National Weather Service meteorologist Jeff Hood said.

2020 Vision: U.S. Emissions Drop



The United States is pumping less heat-trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere today than it did a decade ago, the Environmental Protection Agency reported this week, a welcome departure from the trend of rapidly accelerating emissions elsewhere in the world's biggest industrialized countries.

Emissions of carbon dioxide and other human-produced greenhouse gases – like methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and others – fell by 3.4 percent between 2011 and 2012, and have dropped by about 10 percent since 2005, the EPA said Tuesday.

The announcement came in its Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks, which the agency submits each year to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the international body charged with assessing the state of the world's climate every few years.


The drop in emissions was due both to short-term weather factors and longer-term shifts in the U.S. energy mix. "The decline ... was driven mostly by power plant operators switching from coal to natural gas, improvements in fuel efficiency for transportation and a warmer winter that cut demand for heating," the Los Angeles Times reported.

Mild Mannered Winters



It's been a rough winter for tens of millions of Americans, with heavy snow and bitterly cold weather repeatedly sweeping the northern, central, and eastern U.S.

But there are some cities that have enjoyed a much tamer winter than usual, with far less snowfall than a typical winter brings.


We combed through 2013-14 snowfall data for every metropolitan area in the country, as defined by the Census Bureau. For each metropolitan area we selected a representative location – usually the local airport – with the most complete snowfall data this season, as well as an official 1981-2010 climate benchmark for average snowfall as defined by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
