SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT)- We don't feel the full impact of hurricanes here in the Valley, though we get plenty of rain. Severe weather occurring nearby, is a good reminder to everyone the importance of being prepared.

Hurricanes are seen days before they hit. But for those of us in the Tennessee Valley, severe weather can pop up rapidly. This time of year Emergency Management Officials fear that people in the Tennessee Valley can become complacent when it comes to being prepared for severe weather.

Continued Threat For Gulf Coast

Heavy Rain, Flood Threat Continues For Gulf Coast, Lower Mississippi Valley

  Soaking rainfall is expected to spread east along the Gulf Coast and through other parts of the South into Monday night, potentially causing flooding problems in areas where rain persists the longest. An upper-level low pressure system and an area of low pressure sliding east along the Gulf Coast have combined to deliver the drenching downpours. The surface low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico formed partially in response to the mid- and upper-level remnants of Hurricane Patricia. Also involved is the leftover moisture from Patricia.

  This setup resulted in flooding along parts of the Texas Gulf Coast, including the Houston metro area, on Saturday. Many roadways and vehicles were reported to be under water around Houston Saturday night. Other parts of Texas have also seen flooding in recent days, with localized rainfall totals of more than one foot. Corsicana, Texas, has already received more than 20 inches of rain since Thursday, causing serious flash flooding. In addition to flooding, a few rotating thunderstorms may spawn brief tornadoes along the Gulf Coast through Monday night.

Forecast: Flood Threat Spreads East:
The heavy rain will continue to spread a bit farther east, into portions of Alabama, Georgia, the central Florida Panhandle, as well as into North and South Carolina and Tennessee. The threat of flooding may be enhanced in southern Alabama, southern Mississippi and the western Florida Panhandle due to a persistent inflow of Gulf moisture. A few severe storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts or isolated tornadoes from southern Alabama into the western and central Florida Panhandle. Strong winds will continue along the immediate Gulf Coast, with gusts topping 30 mph at times on Monday.

Torrential rainfall led to dangerous flooding across Texas over the weekend, creating impassable roads and cutting power to thousands.
Nearly 30 water rescues were performed in the Houston area alone as high water overtook dozens of roadways.

Magnitude 7.5 Earthquake kills 100's

A major earthquake rocked Afghanistan, Pakistan and India on Monday.
More than 100 people were killed, according to the Associated Press.
Dozens of homes were destroyed in Badakhshan, Afghanistan, in two remote and sparsely populated rural districts, local police told the AP.
The 7.5-magnitude temblor struck at 1:40 p.m. local time Monday, 45 kilometers north of `Alaqahdari-ye Kiran wa Munjan, Afghanistan, the United States Geological Survey reported.

Tropical Threats in Indian Ocean

A pair of tropical systems could develop across the northern Indian Ocean this week with possible impacts for India, Bangladesh, Oman and Yemen.
The North Indian Ocean is now entering its second peak of the tropical season. This surge occurs during the months of October and November, following a period of less activity during the monsoon season that started in late May.
As warm ocean waters remain in the Bay of Bengal, a low pressure system is beginning to take shape near Sri Lanka to the southeast of India.

Patricia Spares Mexico of damage

Patricia has moved into the northwest Gulf of Mexico as a tropical rainstorm after barreling onshore with catastrophic force, which the major cities in southwestern Mexico escaped.
The rugged terrain of Mexico forced Patricia to rapidly weaken after it made landfall on Friday evening.
Despite weakening, the danger of life-threatening flooding expanded into the United States as a combination of Patricia's moisture and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico surged northward.
Patricia made landfall at approximately 6:15 p.m. CDT on Friday along the coast of southwestern Mexico near Cuixmala, Mexico, around 55 miles west-northwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, as a Category 5 hurricane.
Maximum-sustained winds were estimated to be 270 km/h (165 mph), making Patricia only the second Category 5 hurricane to originate in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and make landfall in Mexico. The other was an unnamed hurricane in 1959 that also made landfall near Manzanillo.
