Cool Weather Scares The Crowd Away At Millerton Lake
Cool weather gets the blame for keeping the crowd away at Millerton Lake. People who did make the trip up the hill found plenty of room to play on land and the lake.
The water was just like glass and as you looked out on the lake there were very few boats to be seen. We went for a ride on the water and discovered people having picnics in one spot and campers in another.
Elizabeth Charlberg was visiting from Southern California. "We're just camping for the weekend. Enjoying some time with family and kayaking and just want to have some fun with the babies. Haven't seen them in a bit."
It may have been a bit chilly on the lake but that didn't keep swimmers out of the water. The Davis kids were ready to go. "We're gonna wake board and knee board today too. "I'm gonna go in the water." People who were brave enough to jump in told us the water was surprisingly warm.
Boaters had a lot of room to throttle up and enjoy some fresh air. Dave Barkman manages Millerton Lake Marina. He says Saturday is not the typical start of the three day holiday weekend. "It's really pretty unusual but it's only because it's the cold weather. I've seen holidays up here where they've had so many people in the park they had to shut the place down."
That wasn't the case Saturday but no one seemed too disappointed. Robert Greco will spend the weekend on his boat. "It's been like this the last couple of years. Five years ago this thing was crowded. But with the recession and gas, people don't.
For some people it was a good day to curl up on a rock and give the fishing pole time to hook something. A few people did make the effort to enjoy the lake and they probably weren't disappointed that their friends and neighbors stayed home.
