10 Coldest Temperatures in U.S. History

 Emperor penguins gather on Antarctica's rocky ice-covered surface. Earth's lowest temperature on record was set here on July 21, 1983, when the Vostok research station dropped to 128.5 degrees below zero Fahrenheit.
As cold weather marches across the nation's heartland after this weekend's winter storm in the Midwest, it's a reminder that winter weather is here. So we took a look at the coldest temperatures on record across the country.
Many of the places on the list will be familiar — like Alaska, Montana and North Dakota — while others may come as more of a surprise, including those in the first group like Nevada, New Mexico and Utah.
