Snowy night causes dozens of crashes

South State Street, seen from Roosevelt Road looking north early Saturday.

The snow was expected to stop accumulating by daybreak, with total depths between one and two inches, according to David Beachler, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville.
Overnight, the snowfall and cold ground temperatures yielded dangerous conditions that contributed to a spike in crashes on local roadways, authorities said.
