PGA officials prepared for severe weather at Quail Hollow

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
The city of Charlotte isn't the only entity planning ahead for the threat of severe weather.

Practice rounds start Tuesday for the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in south Charlotte.

Channel 9 spoke with PGA officials about the specific plans in place for various weather events, including tornadoes, thunderstorms and rain.

Officials said they were keenly aware of the threat for severe weather for Tuesday and Wednesday -– the tour has a team of meteorologists who travel around the country to gather on-site weather updates.

They have equipment that can detect a buildup of energy in the air to predict when lightning strikes are about to occur, so they can give people on the course a heads up that they might need to start seeking shelter.

The PGA meteorologist Channel 9 spoke with Tuesday said only once has he had to evacuate a golf course because of tornadoes.

The professionals have practice rounds Tuesday, but they're very concerned about a youth exhibition that starts at 4 p.m.
