Chicago area set for a period of tranquil winter weather

Chicago area set for a period of tranquil winter weather
temperatures are expected to be averaging near normal through next Monday. In addition, little or no snowfall is expected. The relatively benign weather forecast for the Midwest has its source over the Pacific Ocean. Satellite imagery late Monday indicated a large weather system swirling off Northern California. This will induce mild, westerly flow across most of the continental U.S. This pattern is referred to as "zonal" by meteorologists, because winds blow along zones, or parallels of latitude. Mild winter conditions and weak, fast-moving storm systems are typically the rule within zonal flow.In contrast, a meridional flow represents a stormy, highly amplified jet stream flow that produces strong winds, intrusions of arctic air and the potential for major snowstorms.
