"Can you believe this? I measured the snow on my deck this morning: 6 inches," Traci Clarke of West Dundee said.Elgin Public Services Director Greg Rokos said the city was expecting much less snow. While crews were out all day trying to catch up, he said he expected the evening rush hour to be better than the morning.
"It snowed 6 inches when 1 to 3 was predicted. It was an issue this morning," he said Monday afternoon. "But by 6 p.m. all the snow will be pushed to the curb. The snow has to be pushed to the curb, otherwise the rain forecast .. would cause flooding."
East Dundee Public Works Director Jim Kelly said the quantity also took him by surprise.
"It is what it is, but we were all under the impression we were going to see one or two inches," Kelly said.
The Dundee area's messy state routes, including Route 25, Route 72 and Route 68, which are plowed by Illinois Department of Transportation crews, have made it difficult for Kelly's crews to get back and forth to clear the snow in East Dundee, where crews started at 6 a.m. he said.
