Georgia Strait Waterspout

Davis Bay resident Denys Carrier was eating dinner Thursday night around 6 p.m. when he looked west toward Parksville and saw a rare sight in the Strait of Georgia – a waterspout.
The tornado-like column of water stretched to the clouds as Carrier snapped a series of photos, then it disappeared.
“It was quite amazing,” said Carrier. “The sun came out at the same time, which made the pictures quite beautiful."
It was the first time Carrier had seen a waterspout since he moved to Davis Bay - located south of Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast - in 2006.
There are two types of waterspouts, according to the U.S. National Ocean Service: fair weather and tornadic waterspouts.

Fair weather waterspouts start on the surface of the water and work their way upward. Tornadic waterspouts reach down from thunderclouds and are usually accompanied by lightning, high winds and hail, according to the service.
