7.8 Earthquake Strikes Solomon Islands

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Solomon Islands Friday morning local time.
There were no reports of injuries or major damage except for Some power outages that were reported in the Solomon Islands, and a tsunami watch has been canceled for Hawaii.
The epicenter was located about 42 miles west-southwest of Kirakira, and some 120 miles southeast of Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands.
The tremor, which struck at a depth of about 25 miles, occurred at 4:38 a.m. Friday morning local time. It wasn't immediately known if the massive earthquake triggered a tsunami.
According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, a tsunami watch that was issued for Hawaii was later canceled. All other tsunami watches or warnings were canceled, even though the PTWC said waves as high as 10 feet were still possible in the Solomon Islands.
This earthquake ties three other 7.8 magnitude tremors as the strongest reported on Earth in 2016.
