Dear EarthTalk: If the ice caps are melting, what is happening to the salt content of the oceans? And might this contribute to weather patterns or cause other environmental problems?

It`s true that the melting of the polar ice caps as a result of global warming is sending large amounts of freshwater into the world’s oceans.
Environmentalists and many climate scientists fear that if the climate heats up fast enough and melts off the remaining polar ice rapidly, the influx of freshwater could disturb ocean currents enough to drastically change the weather on the land, as well.
The Gulf Stream, a ribbon of ocean water that delivers heat from the tropics up to the North Atlantic, keeps northeastern U.S. and northwestern Europe weather much milder than other areas at the same latitude around the globe. In theory, less salt in the ocean could stall out the Gulf Stream and rob some of the world’s greatest civilization centers of their natural heating source, plunging the two continents into a cold snap that could last decades or longer — even as the rest of the globe warms around them.
The Gulf Stream keeps running because the warmer water travelling north is lighter than cold water, so it floats on top and keeps moving. As the current approaches the northern Atlantic and disgorges its heat, it grows denser and sinks, at which point it flows back to the south, crossing under the northbound Gulf Stream, until it reaches the tropics to start the cycle all over again. This cycle has allowed humans and other life forms to thrive across wide swaths of formerly frozen continents over thousands of years. But if too much dilution occurs, the water will get lighter, idling on top and stalling out the system.
Some scientists worry that this grim future is fast approaching. Researchers from Britain’s National Oceanography Center have noticed a marked slowing in the Gulf Stream since the late 1950s. They suspect that the increased release of Arctic and Greenland meltwater is to blame for overwhelming the cycle, and fear that more warming could plunge temperatures significantly lower across land masses known as some of the most hospitable places for humans to live.
Of course — not surprisingly — others have noted a contradictory trend: Some parts of the world’s oceans are getting saltier. Researchers from the UK’s Met Office and Reading University reported in a recent issue of the peer-reviewed journal Geophysical Research Letters that warmer temperatures over southerly sections of the Atlantic Ocean have significantly increased evaporation and reduced rainfall from Africa to the Caribbean in recent years, concentrating salt in the water that’s left behind. In fact, the Atlantic in this region is about 0.5 percent saltier than it was four decades ago.
But given how little we really know about the future effects of our carbon loading of the atmosphere, calling these two trends contradictory might be premature, as the two regions of ocean interact with one another and are part of a larger whole. Looking instead at the big picture, it’s clear that climate change is already having a relatively large effect on the world’s oceans by fundamentally altering evaporation and precipitation cycles. Only time will tell how dramatic the results of these changes will be.

Why rain in the Northeastern United States is getting more intense and more destructive


One contributing factor is the global rise in greenhouse gas emissions. Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have emitted about 535 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide. Those gases have increased the water vapor content of the atmosphere, thus making rainy areas like the Northeast more susceptible to severe rain. (The Northeast gets more precipitation than any other region in America.)

This picture shows that rainfall is going up in the Northeast and down in the Southwest. I wonder if there could be a way that we could somehow transport all that water from the Northeast to the Southwest. The Southwest really needs water. I would be interesting if one day we had the technology to transport that water in the places that actually need it.

Lower Lakes Region:

  • Expect a cool, wet start to spring, filled with a mix of rain and snow showers.

Convectional rainfall occurs when:
  • The surface of the earth is heated by the sun.
  • The warm surface heats the air above it. Hot air always rises so this newly heated air does so.
  • As it rises the air-cools and begins to condensate.
  • Further rising and cooling causes a large amount of condensation to occur and rain is formed.
  • Convection tends to produce towering cumulonimbus clouds, which produce heavy rain and possible thunder and lightning.
Frontal rainfall occurs when:
  • Two air masses meet, one a warm air mass and one a cold air mass.
  • The lighter, less dense, warm air is forced to rise over the denser, cold air.
  • This causes the warm air to cool and begin to condense.
  • As the warm air is forced to rise further condensation occurs and rain is formed.
  • Frontal rain produces a variety of clouds, which bring moderate to heavy rainfall.
Relief Rainfall occurs when:
  • The prevailing winds pick up moisture from the sea as they travel across it, making the air moist.
  • The moist air reaches the coast and is forced to rise over mountains and hills.
  • This forces the air to cool and condense, forming clouds.
  • The air continues to be forced over the mountains and so it drops its moisture as relief rain.
  • Once over the top of the mountain the air will usually drop down the other side, warming as it does so. This means it has a greater ability to carry water moisture and so there is little rain on the far side of the mountain. This area is called the rain shadow

The year was the second-hottest in recorded history, NASA said, while scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported 2017 was the third-warmest they have ever recorded.

The renewed evidence of climate change, driven by human emissions of greenhouse gases, comes as the Trump administration moves to open new areas for oil drilling and rolls back regulations that sought to reduce global warming, most prominently by moving to repeal the Obama administration’s Clean Power Plan. The administration said it would withdraw from the Paris climate agreement last year.

I don't understand how people can refuse the evidence of climate change. It is right here in front of our faces and it's scary. It'll only get scarier if we don't do anything to slow down the warming of our plant.

Six years of drought, a pine beetle infestation and generations of forest mismanagement means there are 129 million dead trees in California, most of them on federal land. But until they burn, there is much more profit to be made building houses than clearing trees.
"In this area something like 25,000 houses were built in the last 10 years and in the same time, 20,000 houses have burned," Kearns says. "In the past we might have managed fire thinking about the past and a lot of, you know, a lot of natural hazards have been viewed that way sort of through the lens of history."

The body diverts blood flow from the surface as the temperature drops so the most important parts stay warm the longest. This allows the body's core to be protected for longer. If blood flow is gone from the extremities for too long, the cells start to die. Depending on the severity of the damage, new cells will either replace the old or that part of the body is lost to frost bite.

When We Are Cold:

  • A reduction in body temperature results in impaired body function
  • When you get cold, you want to pee
  • Skin temperature falls below about 10°C, the surface blood vessels dilate (get wider) rather than constrict

Tips for coping in hot weather

  • Shut windows and pull down the shades when it is hotter outside. If it's safe, open them for ventilation when it is cooler.
  • Avoid the heat: stay out of the sun and don't go out between 11am and 3pm (the hottest part of the day) if you're vulnerable to the effects of heat.
  • Have cool baths or showers, and splash yourself with cool water.
  • Drink cold drinks regularly, such as water and fruit juice. Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol.
  • If you have to go out in the heat, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat.
  • Don't leave anyone in a parked car.
  • Avoid extreme physical exertion.
  • Sprinkle water over your skin or clothing, or keep a damp cloth on the back of your neck.

The difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke

  • Heat exhaustion is when the temperature inside the body rises above the normal 37°C, but remains lower than 40°C. 
  • This causes levels of water and salt in the body to fall and can make you feel sick, faint or sweat heavily. 
  •  once taken to a cool place and given water, a person with heat exhaustion should start feeling better within half an hour.
  • If left untreated a person with heat exhaustion could develop heat stroke
  • Heat stroke means that the body can longer cool itself and starts to overheat. 
  • Heat stroke untreated can lead to organ failure, brain damage and even death. 
  • Heat stroke should be treated as a medical emergency.

Any downturn in the temperatures has been because of the La Nina that's present this year. There was a El Nino durind 2015 and 2016, now we have the La Nina which began in 2016. El Ninos drive up global temperatures whereas La Ninas have less than average cold waters in the Pacific. La Ninas tend to cool the planet down. This year has been one of the top five hottest years despite the La Nina that has been present for two years. Clearly this shows just how much the Earth is warming up.

Conditions in the atmosphere affect how the snow crystals form as they fall. Snow can fall in two different ways, symmetrical or in large clumps of flakes. Once the snow hits the ground depending on the temperature changes, winds, or how long the snow has been on the ground determines the different qualities that the snow can gain. Types of snowfall to scientists and meteorologists are called snowpacks and snow formations.

We all have to work together with our country and with the countries around us to reduce just how much our climate is changing. No matter what your political views are, you can do things to limit the harmful things we are doing to the Earth. We can all pitch in by reducing our personal carbon emissions. To really fix this problem we need our leaders to be on board.

This image is somewhat misleading since polar bears are powerful swimmers and climate change will primarily affect them by restricting access to prey. Nevertheless, researchers agree that even small changes in temperature are enough to threaten hundreds of already struggling animals. Time is of the essence: A 2003 study in the journal Nature concluded that 80 percent of some 1,500 wildlife species sampled are already showing signs of stress from climate change.

Although wildlife is really having to adjust to the climate change, they will still survive for now. But they more that we do nothing about it then more animals will be added to this list. Habitat disruptions are a result of temperature changes and the amount of water available. The temperature and amount of water is so important to the habitat because it really vital to the plants. If the native vegetation isn't what it's supposed to be then it will also affect the animals that eat it. Sometimes animals are able to move into different habitats, but it's hard because there are so many places occupied by human influence.

The Pew Center for Global Climate Change suggests that we build "transitional habitats" or "corridors" could help animals that are trying to find a new home. They said that connecting natural habitats that are separated by residential and industrial human developments.
