The funding includes $200 million for schools and $300 million for hospitals. The funds will pay for new boilers, new electrical systems, roofs repairs, structural repairs, flood remediation and more, according to the mayor's announcement.
"Our city has never experienced a storm as destructive as Hurricane Sandy, and financing for these repairs is as necessary as is it urgent," Bloomberg said. "These school buildings and public hospitals are resources that hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers rely on every day -- and we are not waiting for federal aid to begin the work of repairing and re-opening them.."
So far, the city has OK'd $134 million in emergency spending related to Hurricane Sandy damages. The expenses include:
• $20 million for repairs to the Battery Park Overpass.
• $1.7 million for repairs to the Whitehall and St. George ferry terminals.
• $12 million for debris removal.
• $2.5 million for food and water distribution.
• $2 million for the delivery of maintenance, repair and operations supplies for response operation.
• $5 million for electrical plumbing and water line inspections for homes in Staten Island and Queens.
• $1.1 million to the Office of Emergency Management for additional ambulances.
Upon passage, the funding will be added to the Fiscal Year 2013 Capital Commitment Plan.
