Gigantic Glaciers Disappearing
In the Spring of 2005, National Geographic photographer James Balog took on a challenging assignment, to help tell the story of the Earth's changing climate.
"I never imagined you could see glaciers this big disappearing in such a short time. There's a powerful piece of history unfolding in these pictures," said Balog.
After several trips to Iceland, Balog came up with a bold expedition, The Extreme Ice Survey. With a group of young adventurers, Balog began deploying time-lapse cameras across the Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world's changing glaciers. The goal was to put out 25 cameras for three years, recording every that that happened during daylight hours.
