Bering Sea Superstorm Among the Strongest Extratropical Cyclones on Record

The National Weather Service in Anchorage had issued a hurricane force wind warning for the waters surrounding the far western Aleutians as well as parts of the southwestern Bering Sea for Saturday, during which sustained winds were forecast to reach 80 mph in those areas. By Saturday afternoon, the hurricane force wind warnings expired, but gale force wind warnings continued to be in effect into Sunday.
The storm continued to lose some of its ferocity through Sunday as the low-pressure center drifted east across the 180-degree longitude line into the Western Hemisphere. NOAA estimated its central pressure at 952 millibars by Sunday afternoon.
These strong winds, coupled with the potential long duration of this storm, were expected to whip up giant waves over parts of the Bering Sea and north Pacific Ocean. Wave heights in excess of 30 feet were observed at a buoy about 250 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, on Saturday.
However, the National Weather Service reported no significant damage or injuries from the storm as of Saturday. The Alaska Dispatch News reported that no damage or distress calls had been received by the Coast Guard in Kodiak as of 8 a.m. Saturday.
A Jayhawk helicopter crew was sent by the U.S. Coast Guard to Cold Bay, Alaska, and the Cutter Munro was put on alert to help boaters stranded in the storm, if needed, according to KTUU-TV.
The Associated Press said minor damage was reported at Eareckson Air Station in Shemya Island.
According to the Discovery Channel, some of the fishing boats featured in the show 'Deadliest Catch' were reportedly remaining out at sea and attempting to ride out the Bering Sea storm
