Flash Flooding in Louisville

Thursday, April 2, Louisville, KY was hit with torrential rainfall, calling for 100 water rescues and leaving at least one person dead. In some areas, flood waters reached about 8 to 10 ft, submerging many vehicles and rendering them unmovable. Many highways and roads were closed down, even as far out as 60 miles where roads had been completely washed out.

Doppler radar indicated 4 to 7 inches of rain had fallen before early morning on Thursday. Louisville has had 13 inches of total precipitation since the beginning of March, which is 9 inches wetter than usual. The most destructive flash flood event in this area that happened recently was in August of 2009, and caused $45 million in total damage.
