The Philippines and other countries in the Western Pacific were bracing themselves Wednesday for the first major typhoon of the 2015 summer season, as Supertyphoon Maysak blows in from the central Pacific Ocean.
Four people died across Micronesia on Tuesday, as Maysak battered the remote Yap islands with 250 kilometer per hour winds and driving rain.
Haiyan, in comparison, hit the Philippines with winds of up to 380 kilometers per hour—the strongest ever recorded for a typhoon as it made landfall. It killed more than 7,300 people, and left millions homeless.

Maysak is the first severe storm of what promises to be an unpredictable typhoon season. Possible El Niño conditions are set to influence this year’s Pacific weather patterns and climate change has made extreme weather events more intense and erratic, according to Pagasa, the Philippine weather bureau.
