A sinkhole opened up Sunday night on Dec. 4 swallowing two automobiles. Authorities in San Antonio, Texas, have confirmed the death of a sheriff's deputy Monday, after she drove into a 20-foot deep sinkhole that opened up Sunday night. One person has died. San Antonio authorities confirm that a part-time sheriff's deputy was killed.
According to multiple reports, two cars were swallowed up by the sinkhole on Quintara Road.
In rainy conditions, Nishihara reportedly drove her car into the sinkhole, with the vehicle ultimately ending upside-down, submerged in 12 feet of water. Officials were alerted to the sinkhole around 7:30 p.m. local time Sunday night. By Monday morning, the sinkhole had encompassed the entire width of the road. As the pit continues to grow and fill with sewer water, authorities are trying to determine what caused the sinkhole to open up in the first place. The San Antonio area received more than 5 inches of rain Friday into Sunday. It has yet to be determined in the heavy rain contributed to the opening of the sinkhole.
