Strong winds to whip up big swells

HOWLING winds will continue to buffet the Gold Coast today, with weather experts expecting gales of up to 80km/h.
Winds reached a peak of 78km/h yesterday accompanied by a drop in the temperature to a maximum of just 23C.
While the weather had the Coast in a spin, weather bureau forecaster Andrew Cameron said the high winds were not unusual for this time of year.
"The winds from the south and southeast have come through and lowered temperatures," he said.
"We get these cool changes every so often when the cold air lowers the temperature for a couple of days."
Mr Cameron said the cooler weather began on Monday, with the temperature dropping from 27C to 15C within hours.
"The reason for this temperature drop is because of a low sitting at the Tasman Sea that is developing and increasing swells on the southeast coastal waters," he said.
Surfers will be the biggest winners from the conditions this afternoon and tomorrow morning with swells predicted to reach 3.5m.
Mr Cameron said inland suburbs were also experiencing gusts with Nerang recording wind speeds of about 40km/h.
A storm on Monday night left 115 Paradise Point Energex customers without power from 8.30pm, while 1700 Bundall and Benowa customers were without power from 7am until 2pm yesterday. An Energex spokeswoman said the outage was due to a fallen powerline at Slater Ave after a bird flew into it.
Kristen Stancombe and her family, on holidays from Victoria, were blown away by the conditions.
"It was so windy, which made it a bit of fun for the kids but I'm hoping for some more sun and still weather," she said.
"Melbourne weather has been atrocious so we will take any sun we can get."
