RALEIGH, N.C. --
Colder temperatures returned to central North Carolina Thursday, but 70 and even rain looks possible this weekend.
The warmer weather we had to start the week ended Thursday with highs across the area only in the 50s and morning temperatures starting in the 30s. The chilly temperatures will only be around for a short time as a warm up start Friday.
Thursday’s new drought map expanded moderate drought conditions slightly, now encompassing most of central North Carolina. The deficit for the year is now above three inches. Only 3 days out of the last 37 days have measurable rainfall, meaning more than a trace.
Friday morning will bring another cold start around 40. Mostly cloudy skies will dominate the forecast not only Friday, but through the early part of next week. Despite these clouds, high temperatures Friday afternoon will make it up to 59.
There is a small chance of rain late Friday and early Saturday morning.
Saturday will still be mostly cloudy, but temperatures will continue to warm up to 70. This means great weather for the Fayetteville Rotary Christmas Parade. Saturday is also the first night of Hanukkah.
Sunday will remain warm with a high of 69.
The next cold front arrives late Monday or early Tuesday with a better chance of rain and possibly thunderstorms. High temperatures will still make it up to near 70 Monday under cloudy skies. A few showers stick around early Tuesday, then colder temperatures arrive Tuesday and Wednesday with high only in the 50s.
The normal high temperature this time of year is 57.
The long range outlook has yet another blast of cold air possible for the weekend of December 15 and 16. This one could be the type of cold air that has us saying, “Coldest air of the season, so far.”
