Atmospheric River Bringing Heavy Rain to Northern California and the Pacific Northwest

The weather pattern along the West Coast has changed to one that will continue to deliver a huge soaking to Northern California and the Pacific Northwest during the next several days.
Flood warnings have already been issued and impacts are already being felt. A mud slide was reported on highway 101 south of Crescent City, California and strong winds have downed trees and powerlines.
This follows what was one of the driest Januaries on record in northern parts of the Golden State. San Franciso had a rain-free January for the first time since records began there in 1850.
Although some rain did fall in the Northwest at the beginning of the week, the start of a bigger soaking arrived on Thursday thanks to a so-called atmospheric river. In fact, Seattle-Tacoma already set a record daily maximum rainfall when 1.03 inches fell on Thursday, and more rain continues to be in the forecast.
