Record Early February Warmth Spreading Spring Fever From the West Into the Plains

The calendar may say February, but for many in the West and Plains it will feel like spring into the new week ahead, with record early February warmth continuing in some locations.

    How Warm Will It Be?

    On Sunday, Wichita, Kansas (74 degrees), El Paso, Texas (79 degrees), and Boise, Idaho (65 degrees), were among the cities that set daily record highs.
    Spokane, Washington reached the 50s for the fourth day in a row on Sunday, which is a record warm stretch for so early in the season, according to the National Weather Service. The high of 54 degrees on Sunday was also a daily record.
    Salt Lake City also experienced their fourth consecutive day of record high temperatures on Sunday when the thermometer hit 64 degrees.
    Monday, the potential for record highs will mainly be confined to the Southwest, including Phoenix andAlbuquerqueYuma, Arizona could reach 90 degrees, which would also be a daily record high.
    Much of the Plains will remain up to 20 degrees above average through Tuesday before some cooler air arrives midweek.
    Many areas will record temperatures that are more common in the spring.

      Phoenix is expected to have high temperatures in the lower 80s the next several days which is the average high temperature at the end of March. Dallas should see high temperatures reach the low-mid 70s into Wednesday which are the average high temperature in early April. 
      This trend of above-average temperatures will abate in the Plains by midweek, but continue in the West. The 6-to-10-day temperature forecast from theClimate Prediction Center gives parts of the West a greater than 70 percent chance of above-average temperatures next week; the 8-to-14-day forecast shows an 80 percent chance of above-average temperatures for parts of the West from Feb. 14-20.
