"Project limits food waste using weather forecast"
ARTICLE: "To reduce so-called “food loss,” when unsold but edible food and processed food products are discarded, the Japan Weather Association has started a project to predict food product sales using weather forecasts, and provide the data to private companies.
The sales of many food products are strongly influenced by temperature and weather conditions. Companies end up throwing away a great deal of unsold food by misreading the conditions.
During the trial period, the weather association works together with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial and Science Technology and Waseda University to use artificial intelligence to analyze not only weather reports, but also point-of-sale information gathered by distributors. The system predicts the sales of various products by the day and week.
The association says that sharing precise forecasts based on big data analysis with manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers will enable efficient reduction of food loss. Not ordering unneeded food products also reduces unnecessary shipping."
SUMMARY: Because of poorly read weather and temperature conditions, food has been wasted. Because of this Japan is trying to become more efficient and accurate with the weather forecasting using the Japanese Weather Association to reduce the amount of food wasted. If they can get better, accurate readings then they can become more efficient and sustainable, which is better for everyone in the long-run.
