Severe thunderstorms impacted the Midwest Friday evening, spawning a
tornado that caused injuries and destroyed residences in a Kansas city.
The tornado leveled a small number of homes in what The Kansas City Star reported is a sparsely populated area of Hillsdale Lake, Kansas, around 6:30 p.m.
“Scattered
thunderstorms fired ahead of a frontal system across the Midwest and
central Plains Friday afternoon and evening. The storm that caused a
tornado near Paola formed on the southern end of a line of storms, where
the air mass was particularly unstable,” said weather.com meteorologist
Quincy Vagell. “Other storms further northeast across Illinois caused
flash flooding due to intense rainfall over a short period of time.”
