And earthquake hit southern Maine Tuesday night but it was also felt in states as far away as Connecticut. The quake was a 4.0 magnitude and it hit around 7:12 pm. It's epicenter was 3 miles west of Hollis Center and it was 3 miles deep. Earthquakes are rare in New England. There were a series of earthquakes in 2006 in Maine and the strongest recorded occurred in 1904 with an estimated magnitude of 5/7 to 5.9. Brief shaking was also felt in Boston. East coast quakes are rarely strong enough to be felt over a wide area. Experts say the region's geology can make the effects felt in an area up to 10 times larger than quakes of similar size on the West Coast.
Star indicates the location of the epicenter.
