Severe Weather Interrupts Search for Hikers

Search efforts to find two missing hikers in Glacier National Park’s Two Medicine area were greatly hampered by Mother Nature on Sunday.
Rescue crews battled 70-mph winds, over an inch of snow on the trails and 5-foot tall snow drifts in some areas as they hunted for Virginia resident Neal Peckens, 32, and Maryland resident, Jason Hiser, 32, said Denise Germann, park spokeswoman.
The two men were reported missing by their families on Friday, when they missed their flights home to the East Coast.
Peckens and Hiser departed from the North Shore Trailhead at Two Medicine on Tuesday, Oct. 9.  According to their backcountry permit, the men planned to camp at the Oldman Backcountry Campground on Tuesday night and return to Two Medicine on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
Aerial searches on Sunday were challenged by snowy and windy conditions, as well as by a low ceiling of clouds which blanketed the park most of the day, Germann said.
