Super Typhoon Bopha Bears Down on Philippines

Super Typhoon Bopha, packing maximum sustained winds of 160 mph, is headed toward a direct hit on the southern Philippines.
Background

Bopha, the equivalent of a category-five hurricane, grazed the southern islands of the Republic of Palau late Sunday night local time, producing wind gusts up to 70 mph at the National Weather Service office in Koror, Palau.  Approximately 21,000 live in the Republic of Palau, a group of roughly 300 islands east of the Philippines.  According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Bopha's powerful, but rather small (hurricane wind field only somewhat larger than 2004's Hurricane Charley) will make landfall in Mindanao Island Tuesday, local time, then continue west-northwestward through the central Philippines. Mindanao is the second largest and easternmost island in the Philippines.
