Intense storms that crossed northernMississippi over the weekend, prompting a tornado watch for the area, spawn a confirmed damaging tornado.
The National Weather Service (NWS) reported on Sunday (April 28) that a brief EF-2 tornado with max winds of 112 mph touched down just before 10 p.m. Saturday, just southeast of the town of Pope in Panola County.
Along the 75-yard-wide and three-quarter of a mile long tornado damage path, two homes sustained roof damage and a nearby shop was destroyed. An RV and flat bed truck were also overturned with sheds damaged and trees and power lines downed, according to the NWS.
Entergy reported more than 300 of its customers lost power as severe storms and the tornado swept across Panola County Saturday night.
While a tornado watch was in effect for the area, no tornado warning was issued for this strong twister. Instead a severe thunderstorm warning was in effect.
Fortunately, no one was injured as a result of this tornado.
This tornado raises the number confirmed in Mississippi so far this year up to 18.
This same storm system also produced a tornado further to the north in western Tennessee that destroyed an animal shelter, leaving a dog and cat dead and one person injured.
