Tornado Watch in New York City as Severe Weather Threatens East Coast

Sever weather threatens a wide swath of the Eastern Seaboard, with the most immediate threats extending from northern New York State to Washington, DC

New York City and much of the surrounding area is under a tornado watch Monday, as severe weather threatens the East Coast from New England to Washington, DC. The National Weather Service declared a tornado watch, meaning the conditions are right for a dangerous funnel cloud to form and touch down.

The alert lasts from from 9am to 5pm as a system of rain and thunderstorms sweeps through the region.
Forecasters, however, predict the chance of a tornado forming in the city is low - about 5percent.
Damaging straight line winds are also possible. The bulk of the storm is expect to hit on Monday afternoon after 3pm.

Wind gusts of 53mph have already been recorded in and around Syracuse, New York.

Winds speeds could reach 60mph in Manhattan.  Twelve counties in northern New Jersey and eight counties north of New York City are also included in the Tornado watch.

The storm system that is threatening New York is the same series of storms that dumped nearly four feet of snow in South Dakota and brought damaging tornadoes to Nebraska, the Weather Channel reports.
The severe weather is being caused by a cold front pushing east toward the Atlantic.
