With spring right around the corner, the light is at the end of the tunnel for snow-weary residents of the Midwest and Northeast. But just how bright is that light?
Starting with Chicago, we look at the percentage of the snow season still left for several major cities across the nation's northern tier after March 10. Additional facts on late-season snow are also provided for each city, including the average last one inch snowfall and the latest measurable snowfall on record.
Chicago
- How much of the snow season is left?: About 12 percent of the average seasonal snow falls after March 10. This is equal to around 4.4 inches.
- Average last one inch or greater snowfall: March 16
- Average last measurable snowfall (0.1 inches or greater): April 1
- Latest single-day five inch or greater snowfall on record: April 16, 1961
- Latest measurable snowfall on record: 0.2 inches on May 11, 1966
