Most of us will never experience the terror of a tornado destroying
our homes and belongings, but a few unlucky people will experience it
more than once.
As a tornado outbreak began to develop that would
eventually span Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, warnings were issued for
towns that became household names because they were hit before. Vilonia,
Yazoo City and Hackleburg were just a few of the small dots on radar
that were suddenly thrust into a life-threatening situation they knew
all too well, because those tiny points on a map were filled with
residents who have experienced tornado terror in past years.
Here
are some of those towns that caused meteorologists' hearts to sink when
tornado warnings, and even tornado emergencies, were issued.
Three years and two days after an EF2 tornado damaged homes and
ruined lives, an EF4 was bearing down on the town north of Little Rock.
The April 25, 2011 twister that kicked off one of the worst tornado outbreaks in history brought reports of damaged power lines, roofs torn away and four deaths.
Sunday's
storm was even more devastating. Parts of Vilonia were left
unrecognizable and the death toll was higher – at least 10 people died
this time.
Vilonia's residents say they're taking an optimistic
approach to the second recovery effort, leaning on their neighbors for
support.
"A lot of people had to rebuild after the tornado three years ago," Vilonia resident Jill Bonnema told NBC News. "The town has fantastic community spirit and we will rebuild – not exactly how it was, but we will rebuild."http://www.weather.com/news/tornado-central/tornado-outbreak-deja-vu-20140501?pageno=2
