South digs out from record-breaking snowstorm, endures bitter cold

Winter storm hits southern states: North Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Plaguing the south with snow, ice, and freezing temperatures; resulting power outages, school closures, and 3 deaths in North Carolina: One truck driver died from suffering a heart attack while attempting to shovel out his rig, another resident died when a tree fell on him, and a woman died when her oxygen tank was cut off due to power outages.

The largest snow total was 34 inches in Busick, NC, 11.1 inches accumulated in Asheville, N.C., making it the city's third-largest December snowstorm on record. Roanoke, Va experienced 15 inches, which was the city's snowiest December day ever recorded.

Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana experienced freezing fog Tuesday morning due to the storm, and as of Tuesday morning (Dec. 11) in Virginia and the Carolinas, over 60,000 homes and businesses were without power.

According to AccuWeather, another winter storm is expected to hit most of the southern and eastern U.S. later in the week through the weekend, but most of the precipitation expected to fall should be mostly rain, without snow or ice.
