SCOTLAND’S first autumn storm struck overnight and sparked a 48-hour severe weather warning.
Forecasters expect hurricane-force near-80mph gales and up to three inches of rain today – causing transport chaos and flooding.
Forecasters said the weather system – the tailend of tropical storm Nadine near the Azores threatened “horrendous” conditions across a large part of Scotland.
The Met Office warned of possible flooding and transport problems from heavy rain and strong winds. Such high winds can uproot trees, blow vehicles sideways and close bridges.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency are considering flood alerts.
The Met Office issued warnings today for “very heavy downpours” in the Central Belt and the east and south.
There could be up to 50-75mm of rain – two weeks’ worth – with wind gusts to 70mph.
Netweather said gusts could approach 80mph.
Forecasters issued more warnings for tomorrow for all of Scotland bar the far north – with stiff winds and heavy showers also on Wednesday.
