Al Gore: ‘The Dirty Weather Report’
Former Vice President Al Gore has narrated an Oscar-winning documentary and shared a Nobel Peace Prize for his work to alert the world about global warming. Now Gore is about to become a weatherman.
The Climate Reality Project, which Gore chairs, is staging a nationwide on-line presentation on Nov. 14-15, titled: “24 Hours of Reality: The Dirty Weather Report.”
The presentation is designed to counter multi-million-dollar TV propaganda campaigns by Big Oil and Big Coal. Carbon industries have been filling the airwaves with commercials touting more oil drilling, “clean coal” (an oxymoron) and the natural gas exploration process known as fracking.
In the Northwest, coal companies and railroads have created an “Astroturf” and are running TV spots touting proposed use of ports to export coal to China.
The U.S. House of Representatives, last week, passed a bill designed to block the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from regulating emissions of greenhouse gases and to clear away obstacles to location of more coal-burning power plants.
The House vote took place less than 24 hours after federal climate scientists disclosed that the Arctic ice pack had shrunk to record lows in the summer of 2012, covering only 24 percent of the Arctic Ocean. The previous record was 29 percent.
The Climate Reality Project aims to point out the accelerating pace of climate change, and links between climate change and extreme weather (e.g. droughts, floods) and extreme storms being experienced around the world.
“This crisis has to be understood in order to be stopped: The misinformation includes the message that it is not happening, that we can’t stop it, that we can’t afford to act,” Gore said in a videotaped announcement.
