Tornado watch expanded, extended into central Mississippi; damage reported
The threat for isolated tornadoes has been expanded and extended across parts of the state through the overnight.
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) replaced apreviously issued tornado watch and expanded it northward to include much of central and all of southern Mississippi until 2 a.m. Monday.
The new watch covers 41 out of the state's 82 counties including Yazoo, Wilkinson, Wayne, Warren, Walthall, Stone, Smith, Simpson, Scott, Rankin, Pike, Perry, Pearl River, Newton, Neshoba, Marion, Madison, Lincoln, Leake, Lawrence, Lauderdale, Lamar, Kemper, Jones, Jefferson Davis, Jefferson, Jasper, Jackson, Hinds, Harrison, Hancock, Greene, George, Franklin, Forrest, Covington, Copiah, Clarke, Claiborne, Amite and Adams. This does also include the entire Jackson metro area.
Increasing instability and shear within a tropical airmass surging to the north out of the Gulf of Mexico ahead of a strengthening surface low pressure area near Natchez Sunday evening, will support the potential for organized rotating and bowing thunderstorm segments. This will create a continued threat of isolated tornadoes and or damaging winds up to 70 mph overnight, according to the SPC.
